ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING MARCH 18, 2005
IN
THE PRESS:
"Terra Turns
Five" Article Notes University of Wisconsin Research: An article
titled "Terra Turns Five" on NASA's Earth Observatory web site (http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Study/Terra/)
describes major accomplishments made possible with data from the Terra
satellite after five years of operation. Research performed at
the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS)
on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) polar
winds and on the Infusing satellite Data into Environmental
Applications (IDEA) project are noted. (J. Key, E/RA2,

Documentation and
Processing Software for CSBT: Documentation (both the Operations
and Programming Manuals) for the Geostationary Operational
Environmental Satellite (GOES) Imager Clear Sky Brightness Temperature
(CSBT) processing system is now complete. Copies of the documentation
have been forwarded to the Office of Satellite Data Production and
Distribution (OSDPD) for feedback. This is the final step prior to
incorporation of the CSBT processing system as part of the suite of
operational satellite products being generated at the National
Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS), as the
software processing system is also ready for transfer to OSDPD. (J.

ABI Manuscript
Accepted: The manuscript "Introducing the next-generation
advanced baseline imager (ABI) on Geostationary Operational
Environmental Satellites (GOES)-R" was re-submitted and has been
accepted for publication in the Bulletin
of the American Meteorological Society. The manuscript is
available upon request. (T. Schmit, E/RA2,
608-263-0291)
Conference Paper on
the HES Scanning Scenarios Submitted: A manuscript entitled
"Possible scanning scenarios of the GOES-R HES (Hyperspectral
Environmental Suite)" was submitted for the Society of Photo-optical
Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) conference in Orlando, Florida on
March 31, 2005.
The manuscript proposes how the various instruments on GOES-R might
collect their data. The authors are Timothy J. Schmit, James Gurka, W.
P. Menzel, Monica M. Coakley, Anthony Mostek, Kevin Schrab, Mathew M.
Gunshor and Anthony Wimmers. The manuscript is available upon request.

Elementary School
Talk on Satellites and Weather: T. Schmit talked to the fourth
grade class at Blessed Sacrament School in Madison, Wisconsin. The talk
covered early geostationary imager efforts, differences between the
visible, infrared and water vapor bands, and real-time images. As
usual, the questions were very good. What causes hurricanes? How long
do satellites last? How much do they cost? How do we get the data back?
(T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)
Material on GOES-N
Prepared for OSD: T. Schmit supplied J. Gurka (Office of Systems
Development) with a presentation on Geostationary Operational
Environmental Satellite (GOES)-N. The presentation summarizes the
improved temporal coverage during outages and navigational accuracies
on the GOES-N system. Gurka was to meet with members of the press at
Goddard Space Flight Center on the afternoon of March 18th, 2005. (T.
Schmit, E/RA2,

VISITORS:
NEXT WEEK:
GOES-N and -R Seminar to be Given at the NOAA Science Center: T.
Schmit will give a seminar at the NOAA Science Center in Camp Springs,
MD, on March 21st. The title is "The Next Two Geostationary
Steps: Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-N
and GOES-R. An overview will be given of the GOES-N improvements, along
with a summary of the GOES-R baseline instruments, select products and
possible scan scenarios. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)
Retrieval Meeting: As part of a
meeting to summarize the various retrieval systems, T. Schmit and J. Li
(Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS)
will give a talk on the Geostationary Operational Environmental
Satellite (GOES) retrieval status on March 22 in Camp Springs. The talk
is entitled "GOES Retrievals." Both current and future plans will
be discussed.
