Monitors Rapid Intensification of Wisconsin Wildfire: On the
afternoon of May 5 a small brush fire grew into a 4,000-acre forest
fire near the town of Big Flats in central Wisconsin forcing the
evacuation of nearly 100 people and destroying over 20 houses, cabins,
and trailers. The small brush fire was reported at 1:45 pm (18:45
UTC) and grew quickly with forced evacuations by 2:30 pm (19:30
UTC). The GOES-12 Wildfire Automated Biomass Burning Algorithm
(WF_ABBA) identified a hot pixel at 19:15 UTC and the fire rapidly
intensified resulting in a saturated pixel at 19:32 UTC. This was
the state's biggest wildfire in over 20 years. (C. Schmidt,

FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD
JCSDA Cloud and
Precipitation Workshop: A. Heidinger attended the recent
workshop held by the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation
(JCSDA). Results were presented of a model verification study
that compared observed and forecasted 11 micron top of atmosphere
radiances. The initial results indicate that infrared comparisons
may offer a valuable tool in diagnosing the cloud forecasts. The
workshop was held at the National Conference Center in Lansdowne,
Virginia. (A. Heidinger, E/RA1, 608-263-6757)
Proposal and
Manuscript Reviews: J. Key reviewed a proposal for the National
Science Foundation and a manuscript submitted to the Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences.
