Clouds from AVHRR Extended
(CLAVR-x) Transitions to NOAA-18:
The Clouds from AVHRR Extended (CLAVR-x) system has successfully been
modified to routinely process data from the Advanced Very High
Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) flown on the recently launched NOAA-18
satellite. The operational date for NOAA-18 is August 31 but
data
from the AVHRR is already being made available. So far all
CLAVR-x functionality has been demonstrated on NOAA-18 and no issues
have been found. NOAA-18 AVHRR data is now being processed on
the
ORA CLAVR-x system. NOAA-18 data from the OSDPD CLAVR-x system will be
available later this month. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757,

Visit to National Weather Service
Forecast Office: S.
Wanzong, S. Bachmeier, and S. Lindstrom visited the National Weather
Service (NWS) forecast office at Milwaukee/Sullivan, Wisconsin on
August 12 to examine new satellite products in the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing
System (AWIPS) Build 5, and also to compare the NWS AWIPS product
directory structure with that of the real-time AWIPS that is being
configured at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite
Studies (CIMSS). (S. Wanzong, CIMSS, 608-263-1950, S. Bachmeier, CIMSS,
S. Lindstrom, CIMSS)
Papers on GOES-R Hyperspectral Environmental Suite (HES) Data
Compression and MODIS Cloud Classification Presented at SPIE Meeting:
Bormin Huang co-chaired the Conference on Satellite Data Compression,
Communications and Archiving, during the International Society for
Optical Engineering (SPIE) 50th annual meeting held in San Diego,
California from July 31 to August 4, 2005. He gave three
talks
entitled "Current status of ultraspectral sounder data compression",
"Ultraspectral sounder data compression using error-correcting
reversible variable-length coding", and "A new method for
MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) cloud
classification". His co-authors (Alok Ahuja of CIMSS, Don Olsen of
Aerospace Corp., and Prof. Seke Wei of Tamkang Univeristy) also
presented four other papers entitled "On empirical mode decomposition
for ultraspectral data compression", "Assessment of error propagation
in ultaspectral sounder data via JPEG2000 compression and turbo
coding", "Lossless compression of ultraspectral sounder data using
linear prediction with lattice coding", and "Lossless compression of
ultraspectral sounder data using an error-resilient arithmetic coder".
