Paper on Hyperspectral Cloud Microphysical Property Retrieval Published:
A paper titled "Retrieval of Cloud Microphysical Properties from MODIS
and AIRS" has been published in the October issue of the Journal of Applied Meteorology.
Co-authors are Jun Li, Allen Huang (Cooperative Institute for
Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS), Ping Yang (Texas A&M
University), and Tim Schmit (NESIS/STAR). (J. Li, CIMSS, 608-262-3755)
Workshop on Precipitation Modeling and Retrieval:
The International Precipitation Working Group (IPWG), the GEWEX
Radiation Panel (GRP) and NASA’s Global Precipitation Measurement
Program (GPM) co-sponsored a workshop on passive microwave modeling and
retrieval of snowfall at the University of Wisconsin. The goal of the
workshop was to review the state
of the art in passive microwave modeling and retrieval of falling snow
over both land and ocean and to develop future directions and
requirements for algorithm development, implementation and validation
of applications ranging from short-term weather forecasting to climate
data set generation. J. Key gave a presentation titled "Observational
Requirements for Precipitation in the Integrated Global Observing
Strategy Cryosphere Theme". The workshop was co-organized by Ralph Ferraro (NESDIS/STAR) and Ralf Bennartz (University of Wisconsin).

Proposal Submitted:
R. Aune submitted a proposal titled "Improving WRF-NMM Forecasts Using
Observations from GOES" under the Joint Science Development Initiative
(JSDI) to the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation
(JCSDA). The proposed research will investigate how to best
use information from the current GOES series to improve forecasts
generated by the Weather Research and Forecasting - Non-hydrostatic
Mesoscale Model (WRF-NMM). (R.Aune, E/RA2,
