Learning Lessons: The
Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) distance
learning lesson "Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite
(GOES) High Density Winds" was conducted on three days during the month
of December 2005, with 11 National Weather Service (NWS) offices
participating. The "Trough of Warm Air Aloft (TROWAL) Identification"
lesson was also offered once, with 9 NWS offices participating. (S.

HES Spectral Trade-Off Meeting:
T. Schmit gave a presentation entitled "Geostationary Operational
Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Hyperspectral Environmental Suite
(HES) - Original to Minimum Mission" via telecon at the December 22,
2005 HES Spectral Trade-Off Meeting. The main topic of the presentation
was the affect of HES spectral coverage on GOES-R products. The
presentation is available upon request. Others that attend the meeting
from Wisconsin include Paul Menzel, Andy Heidinger, Michael Pavolonis,

ABI Compression Datasets Available:
Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-12 Imager full
disk images have been added to the growing Cooperative Institute of
Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI)
compression study dataset archive. Researchers are
using the data to examine compression techniques that will benefit
current and future GOES imager data storage and
dissemination. Other data sets provided to date include
MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data with
bit-depths reduced to presumed ABI parameters, unaltered MODIS data,
and Meteosat-8 full disk images. An informational web page is
at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/abi/bitdepthcompression/bitdepthcompression.html.
