NPOESS Algorithm Corrdination Meeting: J. Key attended the first National Polar-orbiting Operational
Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) Algorithm Coordination meeting
on January 14 at the Integrated Program Office (IPO) in Silver Spring,
Maryland. The goal of the meeting was to discuss operational
algorithm code for NPOESS, including testing, evaluation, and bug
reporting. Contractor code for some of the Sensor Data Records
(SDRs) and Environmental Data Records (EDRs) is available via the
CasaNOSA system to Internal Government Studies (IGS) and NASA
NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) Science Team investigators. (J. Key,
E/RA2,

DAAC Product Workshop:
J. Key participated in the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC)
Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) Product Workshop January
11-12, 2006 at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The NSIDC DAAC
Product Workshop was the first of a series of DAAC Product Workshops,
which will examine and provide priority recommendations for the
products held at the DAACs. The workshop was organized and
sponsored by NASA Headquarters in part to aid with NASA's
move from a mission to a measurement focus. (J. Key, E/RA2,

Manuscript on Hyperspectral Cloud Properties Published: A manuscript titled "Evaluation of AIRS cloud properties using MPACE data" has been published in the Geophysical Research Letters
(GRL, vol.32, L24819, doi:10.1029/2005GL024400, 2005). Coauthors
are Xuebao Wu, Jun Li (CIMSS), Paul Menzel (STAR/NESDIS), Allen Huang,
Kevin Baggett and Hank Revercomb (CIMSS). An electronic version
is available at ftp://ftp.ssec.wisc.edu/ABS/publications/2005GL024400_AIRS_Cloud_MPACE.pdf. (Jun Li, 608 / 262 - 3755, Jun.Li@ssec.wisc.edu)
ITEMS
FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP
GOES-R Telecon:
On January 13, T. Schmit participated in a Geostationary Operational
Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Atmosphere, Ocean, Land (AOL)
Technical Advisory Panel (TAP) meeting via telecon. A host of issues
were discussed, including Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) visible
nighttime performance and Hyperspectral Environmental Suite (HES)
spectral coverage. (T. Schmit, E/RA2,
608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)
Additional Satellite Imagery of Southern Plains Fire Activity:
Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-12) visible and
shortwave InfraRed (IR) imagery showed the presence of several "hot
spots" due to fires burning across parts of New Mexico, Texas, and
Oklahoma on January 1, 2006. Strong winds were also causing plumes of
blowing sand/dust across that region, and Moderate resolution Imaging
Spectroradiometer (MODIS) true color imagery helped to discriminate
between the plumes of smoke and blowing sand/dust. Image examples and
animations are posted on the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological
Satellite Studies (CIMSS) GOES Gallery (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/misc/060101/060101.html).

GOES PSDI Proposals Resubmitted:
Three GOES Product System Development and Implementation (G-PSDI)
proposals in the new template form were submitted to D. Gray. The
fiscal year 2006 proposals are for "Intercalibration of GOES/Polar
Orbiting Environmental Satellite (POES)", "GOES-N routine check-out and
data archive", and "GOES Sounder and Imager Spectral Response Functions
and Transmittance Files Generation and Implementation". (T. Schmit,
E/RA2,
608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)
Paper on Satellite Communications Accepted for Presentation and Publication at IEEE Conference:
A revised paper titled "Improvement of Burst Error Correction Using a
Look-Up Table with Low Density Parity Check Coding for Compressed
Ultraspectral Sounder Data" has been accepted for presentation and
publication at the IEEE 8th International Conference on Advanced
Communication Technology (ICACT 2006). The authors are Bormin Huang, Y.
Sriraja, Allen Huang (CIMSS), and Mitchell D. Goldberg (NESDIS/ORA).
Bormin Huang was also invited to serve as a chair of Session 7D
(Broadband Satellite & HAPS(II)) in the IEEE ICACT 2006. (B. Huang,
CIMSS, 608-265-2231, bormin@ssec.wisc.edu)
Extended Abtracts on Satellite Data Compression Submitted to IGARSS:
Two extended abstracts entitled "Real-Time DSP Implementation of 3D
Wavelet Reversible Variable-length Coding for Ultraspectral Sounder
Data Compression", and "Lossless Multiwavelet Compression of
Ultraspectral Sounder Data" were submitted to 2006 IEEE International
Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS 2006). The authors are
Bormin Huang, Y. Sriraja, Allen Huang (CIMSS), and Mitchell D. Goldberg
(NESDIS/ORA). The research is in support of the NOAA Geostationary
Operational Environmental Satellite-R (GOES-R) Hyperspectral
Environmental Suite (HES) data compression project. (B. Huang, CIMSS,
608-265-2231, bormin@ssec.wisc.edu)
Manuscript Review: J. Key reviewed a paper on the surface temperature of the Greenland ice sheet for Geophysical Research Letters.
