GOES Users' Conference:
Approximately 350 people attended the Fourth Geostationary
Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Users' Conference in
Broomfield, CO, May 1-3. Several Advanced Satellite Product Branch
(ASPB) members attended with roles including participation on
the program committee, oral presentations (on the Advanced Baseline
Imager and a poster summary), poster presentations (on the topics of
clouds, the Hyperspectral Environmental Suite (HES), nowcasting, GOES-N
and how GOES-R will help fulfill NOAA's missions),
and being co-technical leads for some of the breakout sessions
(CONcept of OPerationS, Algorithm Development and Numerical Weather
Prediction). The next GOES Users’ Conference will be in
January 2008, in conjunction with the annual American
Meteorological Society (AMS) meeting in New Orleans, LA.

SSEC Provides Meteosat Data to
ESPC: The Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) Data
Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is providing the raw High
Rate Information Transmission (HRIT) data from Meteosat-8 to the NOAA
Environmental Satellite Processing Center (ESPC). These data are
being provided to ESPC so that they have a backup for
receiving the data. The SSEC Data Center is also providing
backup to ESPC for Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite
(GOES)-East, GOES-West and Multi-functional Transport Satellite (MTSAT)
data. (D. Wade, SSEC, 608-263-0527)
ITEMS
FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP
Poster Wins "Most Operational Interest" Award:
A poster by Chris Velden (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological
Satellite Studies, CIMSS),
Derrick Herndon (CIMSS), Jim Kossin (CIMSS), Jeff Hawkins (Naval
Research Lab) and Mark
DeMaria
(RAMMB) won the "Most Operational Interest" award at
the Americal Meteoerological Society (AMS) Hurricane
Conference in Monterey, CA, April 24-28. The poster was titled
"Consensus estimates of TC intensity using integrated
multispectral (IR & MW) satellite observations". (C. Velden,
CIMSS,
608-262-9168)
April 2006 VISIT/SHyMet Activities:
During the month of April 2006, distance learning lessons conducted for
the Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) and
Satellite Hydrology and Meteorology (SHyMet) included four
"Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Sounder Data
and Products" lessons with 20 National Weather Service (NWS)
offices participating and two "GOES High Density Winds"
lessons with 13 NWS offices participating.
(S. Bachmeier,
CIMSS, 608-263-3958)
Training Resources Development Workshop:
S. Bachmeier delivered a
presentation for the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental
Satellite System (NPOESS) Training Resources Development
Workshop held in Boulder, Colorado on May 4, 2006. The
presentation was performed remotely from the Cooperative Institute for
Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) using Virtual Institute for
Satellite Integration Training (VISITview), and showed examples of
Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery and
products that are now being displayed on the real-time Advanced Weather
Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) workstations at CIMSS.
