GOES-R Risk Reduction and GIMPAP Annual Review Meetings:
J. Key attended the Geostationary Operational Environental Satellite-R
(GOES-R) Risk Reduction and the GOES Improved Measurements and Product
Assurance Plan (GIMPAP) annual review meetings. Key is a member
of the Technical Advisory Committees (TACs) for both projects.
T. Schmit also attdended the GOES-R meeting as a member of the
TAC. Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies
scientists Steve Ackerman (CIMSS Director), Chris Velden, Jun Li, Wayne
Feltz, Allen Huang, and Bob Knuteson attended one or both of the
meetings. Velden and Huang are part of the GOES-R TAC. (J. Key, E/RA2,

GOES Sounder Data and Products VISIT Lesson: The
Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) lesson
"Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Sounder Data
and Products" was conducted on August 11. Four National Weather Service
(NWS) forecast offices participated in the distance learning session,
with 11 forecasters in attendance. (S. Bachmeier,

GOES SPOP Meeting:
A GOES SPOP meeting was convened on August 10th in Camp Springs.
Presentations were given by J. Daniels, T. Schmit and J. Li (CIMSS).
Topics included the status of the Binary Universal Form for the
Representation of meteorological data (BUFR) Satellite identification
definitions, Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite
(GOES)-11, GOES-12, GOES-12 Imager Cloud-top product, the Imager
Clear-sky brightness temperature product, the first GOES-13 infrared
images, validation statistics and planned research activities at
Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) to
support improved Sounder products. These presentations are available

Proposal Review: J. Key reviewed a proposal on polar cloud detection for the Swedish National Space Board.

NEXT WEEK:
T. Schmit will travel to the San Diego, CA for the International
Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) meeting and give a talk entitled
"Introducing datasets for next generation geostationary imager
compression studies". This is part of the Satellite Data Compression,
Communication, and Archiving session. He will also attend the
Cooperative Research Program (CORP) symposium in Fort Collins, CO, to
give a Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R
overview presentation. Both presentations are available upon request.
