Direct Broadcast MODIS Winds for EUMETCast:
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) polar winds
that are generated at direct broadcast sites in Tromsø, Norway,
and McMurdo, Antarctica, are now being delivered to the European
Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites
(EUMETSAT) for distribution via EUMETCast in the near future.
EUMETCast is EUMETSAT’s broadcast system for
environmental data that uses commercial telecommunication geostationary
satellites to multicast files (data and products) to a wide user
community (http://www.eumetsat.int/Home/Main/What_We_Do/EUMETCast/index.htm?l=en). The
direct broadcast polar wind data are also being delivered to the U.S.
Navy and to the UK Met Office. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605,

Manuscript on Retrieval of Ozone from Geostationary Imagers Submitted:
An manuscript entitled "Retrieval of total column ozone from imagers
onboard geostationary satellites" has been submitted to IEEE Transactions on Geosciences and Remote Sensing.
This manuscript studies the ozone information and retrieval methods
for current and future geostationary imagers such as Spinning
Enhanced Visible and Infra-Red Imager (SEVIRI) onboard the METEOSAT
Second Generation Satellite (MSG) and the Advanced Baseline Imager
(ABI) onboard the next generation of Geostationary Operational
Environmental Satellite (GOES-R). The co-authors are Xin Jin, Jun
Li, Chris Schmidt (CIMSS), Tim Schmit (STAR/NESDIS), and Jinlong Li
(CIMSS). (Jun Li, CIMSS, 608 / 262-3755, Jun.Li@ssec.wisc.edu)
Telecon on Advanced Sounding:
On November 9, T. Schmit participated in the kick-off meeting on the
"Acquisition Strategy for Analysis of Alternatives for Advanced
Sounding and Coastal Waters Imaging Capabilities". This meeting was the
beginning to chart a course for investigation any possible options to
satisfying stated requirements regarding advanced atmospheric sounding
and coastal waters imaging capabilities. The main contact is J. Pereira
of the Office of Systems Development (OSD). (T. Schmit, E/RA2,
608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)
Manuscript Reviewed: A
manuscript, on high-spectral-resolution satellite data, has been
reviewed and returned to the Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic
Technology, Atmospheres. (T. Schmit, E/RA2,
608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)
Other Meetings and Telecons:
On November 1st and 8th, telecons were held with the organizers of the
3rd Future National Operational Satellites Symposium for the upcoming
AMS annual meeting in January. T. Schmit is one of the poster
co-chairs. More information on the program can be found at:
