Numerical Forecasts for South America Use GOES-12 Imager Cloud Product: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Regional Assimilation System (CRAS) is now generating 72-hour forecast imagery, both for the 11 micron band (window) and the 6.7 micron band (water vapor sensitive band), covering South America. Initial cloud fields are created on the model 48 kilometer grid using cloud-top pressure and effective cloud amount retrieved from the GOES-12 imager, which provides hourly, near-full coverage, single field-of view retrievals at 4 kilometer resolution. The accuracy of the forecast imagery will be monitored using standard validation procedures and by objectively comparing them to real GOES-12 imagery. Forecasts can be viewed on a website at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/model/realtime/cras48_SA/daily.html. (R.Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071, robert.aune@noaa.gov)Other Meetings and Telecons:
