J. Gerth Wins NWA Meteorological Satellite Applications Award Grant: J. Gerth, an undergraduate student research assistant with the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), has been selected as the winner of the National Weather Association (NWA) Meteorological Satellite Applications Award Grant, which will be formally presented at the NWA Annual Meeting at Reno, Nevada in October 2007. The NWA also invited him to present his paper "Using Advanced Weather Information Processing System (AWIPS) for Transitioning Research into Operations" at the upcoming NWA Annual Meeting. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958, J. Gerth, CIMSS, 608-263-4942)
Federation of Earth Science Information Partners Meeting in Madison: The
Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) held its 2007
Summer meeting July 17–20, 2007 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The meeting was hosted by the Space Science and Engineering Center
(SSEC). This annual technical meeting focussed on the many dimensions
of sustainability. ESIP is a consortium of more than 90
organizations that collect, interpret and develop applications for
remotely sensed Earth observation information. The ESIP network is
comprised of NASA, NOAA and USGS data centers, research universities,
government research laboratories, supercomputing facilities, education
resource providers, information technology innovators, nonprofit
organizations, and commercial enterprises. The Federation is
supported by NASA and NOAA. Mary Kicza, the NOAA Assistant
Administrator for Satellite and Information Services, attended and took
part in a Town Hall session. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605,

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:
VISIT Activities at CIMSS: The Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) distance learning lessons "Mesoscale Convective Vortices", "Basic Satellite Principles", and "Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Products in Advanced Weather Information Processing System (AWIPS)" were presented by staff from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on July 16, July 19, and July 20, 2007, respectively. Forecasters from NOAA's National Weather Service forecast offices in Northern Indiana, Pendleton, Oregon, the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center (located in Camp Springs, Maryland), and the Spaceflight Meteorology Group (located at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas) participated in the VISIT lessons. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958, S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608-263-4425)
Four Abstracts Submitted to the Great Lakes Operational Meteorology Workshop: Personnel at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) have submitted four abstracts to the 16th U.S.-Canadian Great Lakes Operational Meteorology (GLOM) Workshop, to be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, September 5-7, 2007. The workshop focuses on issues specific to forecasting in the Great Lakes region. The four CIMSS abstracts introduce new products derived from the sounder on board the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) and from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board the NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) platforms. These products will assist forecasters with severe weather detection, aviation forecasting, and the prediction of severe winter storms. (R. Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071; G.S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743)Other Meetings and Telecons:
