GEOSS Americas/Caribbean Remote Sensing Workshop in Brazil: The Global Earth Observation System
of Systems (GEOSS) Americas/Caribbean Remote Sensing Workshop –
Transforming Data into Products, was held November 26-30, 2007 at
the Center for Weather Forecast and Climatic Analysis/National Institute
for Space Research (CPTEC/INPE) Cachoeira Paulista, São Paulo, Brazil.
T.
Schmit and G. Wade (NESDIS/STAR) participated. The workshop had two main components: lectures on various
remote sensing topics and laboratory time to apply the theory to real
data. GOES-10 data and products were described. Presentations given by
Wade and Schmit during the week-long workshop included topics such as
fundamentals of remote sensing, an overview of NOAA Geo Program, an introduction to Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite
(GOES)-10 (Instruments, Products and eXtended GOES High-Inclination
(XGOHI)), the GOES-10 Sounder, and future GOES Systems. Survey comments
include: “excellent”, “wonderful team”, “good job”, “really good”,
“very interesting information”, “appreciate the invitation”, “very
useful”, “not just a workshop, but like a family”, “lab sections were
the best”. Other members of the workshop team include A. Huang, K.
Strabala and T. Rink of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological
Satellite Studies (CIMSS). (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291,

Figure caption: Participants from 12 countries in the GEOSS
Americas/Caribbean Remote Sensing Workshop – Transforming Data into
Products that was held 26-30 November 2007 at CPTEC/INPE in Cachoeira
Paulista - São Paulo, Brazil.
Significance: The workshop brought together 33 participants from 12 countries and will be a catalyst for those countries to better share data and information. The countries include Argentina, Brazil, Bolívia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Equador, México, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. The NOAA contributions of GOES-10 and support for this workshop were greatly appreciated. It was thought that this workshop should be a beginning, not the end.
NOAA Mission Goals: Serve Society's Needs for Weather
and Water Information; Support the Nation's Commerce
NOAA Cross-Cutting Priorities: Sound, Reliable State-of-the-Art Research; Integrating Global Environmental Observations and Data Management

CIMSS VISIT Activities: The two Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) distance learning lessons "Water Vapor Imagery and Potential Vorticity Analysis" and "Trough of Warm Air Aloft (TROWAL) Identification" were given by staff from CIMSS on December 5 and 7, respectively. Forecasters from five separate National Weather Service (NWS) forecast offices (Aberdeen, South Dakota; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Riverton, Wyoming; Spokane, Washington; Wichita, Kansas) participated in the VISIT lessons. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958, S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608-263-4425)Other Meetings and Telecons:
None.
VISITORS:
Visitors from Indian Space Research Organization: Mr. Virender Kumar (attaché for the Indian Space Research Organization, Embassy of India, Washington, DC) and Dr. Ramakrishnan Rajgopalan visited the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) December 5-7. They discussed ISRO's Earth Observation Program and INSAT-3D plans with SSEC/CIMSS scientists. (S. Limay, SSEC; J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)
