Group on Earth Observations User Interface Committee Meeting: Jeff
Key participated (via phone) in the Group on Earth Observations (GEO)
User Interface Committee (UIC) meeting. The meeting was held in
Boulder, Colorado. Key provided a report on the status and future plans
of the Integrated Global Observing Strategy (IGOS) Cryosphere Theme and
its transition, along with the other IGOS themes, into the Global Earth
Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) framework. (J. Key, E/RA2,

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:
Monthly Weather Review Article Selected as "Paper of Note": An article describing a new Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) algorithm that assigns probabilities of secondary eyewall formation in hurricanes has been selected as a "Paper of Note" by the Senior Editor of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. An abstract is scheduled to appear in the November issue of BAMS. The article is now available as an Early Online Release in Monthly Weather Review. (J. Kossin, CIMSS, 608-265-5356, M. Tim Schmit participated in telecons for the GOES Users' Conference program committee and the monthly
National Weather Service (NWS) SRSST (Satellite Requirements and
Solutions Steering Team) SRSST. One of the topics was regarding the
briefing on the need for high-spectral resolution infrared

VISITORS:
Visit by MIT/Lincoln Labs Convective Aviation Group: Dr.
Haig Iskenderian and Chuck Ivaldi met with the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Nowcasting
and Aviation APplications team to discuss satellite-based aviation
weather methodologies to enhance nowcasting of rapidly developing
convection prior to indication on radar. Dr. Iskenderian presented a
CIMSS seminar titled "Applications of GOES imager data to improve
convective forecasts". Future collaborations on turbulence and volcanic
