GOES-O Science Plan Milestone Completed: Along
with D. Hillger, the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite
(GOES)-O STAR milestone to develop and implement science plan
for GOES-O checkout was completed. More information on the upcoming GOES-O Science
Test is posted at: http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/projects/goes-o. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

Aerosol, Radiation and Cloud Processes Affecting Arctic Climate (ARCPAC) Workshop: Results
from April 2008 Realtime Air Quality Modeling System (RAQMS) global
aerosol assimilation studies were presented at the Aerosol, Radiation
and Cloud Processing affecting Arctic Climate (ARCPAC) science team
meeting in Boulder, CO. Discussions with the science team focused on
using RAQMS analyzed Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), in conjunction with
satellite and insitu measurements of ice effective radius and ice water
content, to investigate Arctic indirect aerosol effects. ARCPAC was one
of NOAA's airborne missions in support of International Polar Year
(IPY) activities.

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:
Preschool Talk on Satellite Meteorology: Mat
Gunshor of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite
Studies (CIMSS) spoke with the 3-4 year old preschool class at Meeting
House Nursery School in Madison, Wisconsin, on Friday March 13, 2009.
The children learned about polar and geostationary orbits, hurricanes,
the oceans, Earth's rotation, the poles, and various other Earth
Science concepts. Each child received the "NOAA-N Prime" mission
summary booklet as well as postcards of Hurricane Ivan and CloudSat and
their classroom was presented with a Hurricane Katrina poster and
NOAA/NASA educational calendar. (M. Gunshor, CIMSS, 608-263-1146)
Paper on New Satellite-Based Method for Hurricanes Submitted: A manuscript entitled "Tropical Cyclone Convection and Intensity Analysis using Differenced Infrared and Water Vapor Imagery" by Timothy Olander and Christopher Velden has been submitted to the journal Weather and Forecasting. (C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168; T. Olander, CIMSS, 608-265-8005)
VISITORS:
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Tech Center Visit:
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) personnel Tom Carty (FAA Tech
Center Manager) and Michael Richards visited the Cooperative Institute
for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on March 11-12, 2009 to
discuss possible Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen, http://www.jpdo.gov/nextgen.asp)
4-D weather cube satellite data collaborations. STAR/ASPB and CIMSS
presentations overviewing research in the areas of turbulence,
convection, volcanic ash, SO2, fog, GOES-R, and data/product
availability were given. Future collaborations are likely to support
satellite related research to operations product availability into FAA
Tech Center NextGen Weather Evaluation Capability Lab. (W. Feltz,
