GOES-R Algorithm Working Group Aviation CDR Conducted: The GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) Aviation Team Critical Design Review (CDR) was held in Camp Springs, MD on September 16, 2009. Wayne Mackenzie (University of Alabama - Huntsville) presented the algorithm theoretical basis for the convective initiation requirement and Kristopher Bedka (formerly CIMSS) presented the Overshooting-top/Enhanced-V requirement. Other Aviation Team members in attendance included Co-chairs Ken Pryor (NOAA/NESDIS) and Wayne Feltz (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS). The CDR's were successfully conducted and milestones were achieved with GOES-R AWG algorithm development phase. (W. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-265-6283, J. Brunner, CIMSS)
NASA GEO-CAPE Science Working Group Meeting: Brad
Pierce participated in the NASA GEO-CAPE Science Working Group (SWG)
meeting in Columbia, MD, 22-24 September 2009. The Geostationary
Coastal and Air Pollution Events (GEO-CAPE) mission will focus on
sources of aerosols and ozone precursors, tracking of urban to
continental scale air pollution transport, and the dynamics of coastal
ecosystems. Discussions with the GEO-CAPE aerosol and interdisciplinary
working groups included identification of synergistic observing
capabilities with future GOES platforms (GOES-R and GOES-S) (R.B.

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:
Election to AMS Hurricane Committee: The American Meteorological Society (AMS) Scientific Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) on Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology has elected Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientist Christopher Velden as a new member. The service term is 1 January 2010 through 31 December 2012. (C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)
EUMETSAT Satellite Conference: Several Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists and one Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) scientist presented research results at the EUMETSAT Satellite Conference in Bath, England 21-25 September 2009. Reports from CIMSS included Hank Revercomb, Tom Achtor, Steve Wanzong, Ralph Petersen, Hong Zhang and Ralf Bennartz. ASPB scientist Andy Heidinger also provided a report. The meeting had sessions on future systems, atmospheric composition, climate, hyperspectral sounding and numerical weather prediction. (T. Achtor, CIMSS, 608-263-4206)
GOES-R Imagery ATBD Updated and Delivered: The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R imagery’s team Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document (ATBD) has been updated and delivered to the Algorithm Integration Team (AIT). In addition, responses to the Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) review comments have been addressed. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)VISITORS:
