First Meeting of the WMO Panel on Polar Observations, Research, and Services: The
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Executive Council recently
formed a Panel of Experts on Polar Observations, Research, and Services
(PORS). The first meeting of this panel was in Ottawa, Ontario. It was
sponsored by Environment Canada. The Panel provides a high-level,
international partnership to secure the International Polar Year (IPY)
observing system legacy in cooperation with operational agencies,
provide guidance in the development of the WMO Strategic Plan related
to the polar regions, facilitate the acquisition, exchange, and
archiving of observational data, provide a forum for discussion of
scientific issues, make recommendations on research and operations
related to the polar regions, and cooperate with international programs
related to climate change research and prediction. The Panel has
representatives from 17 countries. The three U.S.
representatives are Jeff Key, NOAA/NESDIS, Aimee Davaris, National
Weather Service Alaska Region, and Karl Erb, National Science
Foundation. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)
Significance: Space agency contributions to IPY are providing
much-needed observations of the polar regions not only during IPY, but
as part of an IPY legacy. Observations from space are an essential
component of the WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) and,
therefore, part of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems
(GEOSS).
NOAA Mission Goals: Serve Society's Needs for Weather and Water
Information; Understand Climate Variability and Change; Support the
Nation's Commerce
NOAA Cross-Cutting Priorities: Sound, Reliable State-of-the-Art Research; Integrating Global Environmental Observations and Data Management
