WMO Data Assimilation and Observing System Working Group Meeting: The
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Working Group (WG) on Data
Assimilation and Observing Systems (DAOS) held it's third meeting in
Montreal. Representatives from most major data assimilation centers
populate the WG, and the meeting welcomed special invited attendees as
well. The agendas focused on topics such as THORPEX, data targeting (WG
to release an authoritative statement on the impact of targeting
shortly), recent and planned field campaigns, observational
developments, and recent advances in data assimilation methods. C.
Velden, Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies
(CIMSS), is a member of the WG, and presented results of enhanced
satellite-derived wind information from rapid scanning scenarios during
the THORPEX Pacific Regional Campaign (TPARC) on model forecasts of
typhoon tracks. The results show a notable reduction in track forecast
error with the enhanced wind information assimilated into the Naval
Research Laboratory 4DVAR system. Other results from the European Centre
for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) showed the value of
dropsondes and locally-enhanced satellite data in sensitive regions
targeted by singular vectors toward improving track forecasts.

Earth Radiation Budget Requirements Meeting: Andrew Heidinger attended a workshop at the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) in Asheville, North Carolina. The purpose of the workshop was to poll the science community for requirements on future Earth radiation measurements from NOAA Satellites. The participants included a wide range of scientists from governmental, industrial and academic institutions. A workshop report will be available in one month. (A. Bi-agency Volcanic Ash Teleconference: An informal teleconference was held to begin exploring common areas where NOAA and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) can work together to improve mitigation of the hazards posed by volcanic ash. Volcanic ash modeling, observations, and response services were among the topics discussed, and several areas of potential collaboration were identified. This group will reconvene more formally in September at the Anchorage Aviation/Volcanic Ash Conference in Anchorage, AK. (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov)VISITORS:
