WCRP Workshop on Global Climate Satellite Datasets: The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Observations and Assimilation Panel (WOAP) held a workshop on the “Evaluation of Satellite-Related Global Climate Datasets” in Frascati, Italy, 18-20 April 2011. The meeting took place at the European Space Agency facility (ESRIN). J. Key was a co-organizer. The primary aim of the workshop was to produce a technical report on detailed assessments of existing datasets for key essential climate variables (ECVs) against Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) guidelines. A further aim of the workshop was to develop a framework for an inventory of all ECV datasets that includes indices of the maturity and uncertainties of each product. The workshop participants strongly recommended organized, in-depth, independent assessments of climate data records. It was also decided to begin compiling an inventory of satellite datasets, beginning with the ECV products presented at the workshop. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)
