Satellite Imagery of Severe Thunderstorm Outbreak Across Northeastern Texas: A major outbreak of severe thunderstorms occurred across northeastern Texas on April 3, 2012, which produced over a dozen tornadoes and widespread large hail in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/10122) posted a variety of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Suomi National Polar Partnership (NPP) Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) images from this event. The 375-meter resolution of the VIIRS imagery was particularly revealing in terms of the numerous thunderstorm overshooting tops that could be identified. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958)VISITORS:
