American Meteorological Society's "State of the Climate 2011" report was
published this week (J. Blunden and D. Arndt (eds.), Bull. Amer.
Meteorol. Soc., 93, S1-S282, doi: 10.1175/2012BAMSStateoftheClimate.1).
Scientists from the Advanced Satellite Products Branch (A. Heidinger, J.
Key), the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies
and the Space Science Engineering Center (CIMSS, SSEC; S. Ackerman, Y.
Liu, M. Foster, L. Keller, M. Lazzara, B. Maddux) were co-authors on

Overshooting Top Paper Published: A manuscript titled "Comparison between GOES-12 Overshooting Top Detections, WSR-88D Radar Reflectivity, and Severe Storm Reports" by R. Dworak, K. Bedka, J. Brunner and W. Feltz (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS) has been published in Weather and Forecasting (Vol 27, pp 684-699). This paper compares the objective satellite-based Infrared Window (IRW) Overshooting (OT) detection method to surface based radar, severe storm reports, and severe weather warnings over the central and eastern United States. The paper demonstrates the usefulness of the IRW-OT method in regions of insufficient radar coverage and in increasing warning lead time in the upcoming GOES-R ABI era. (R. Dworak, CIMSS, 608-265-8620, J. Brunner, CIMSS, 608-265-2115, W. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-265-6283)
