Global Cryosphere Watch Presented to Interagency Arctic Research Policy Commitee: J.
Key gave a presentation on the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO)
Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW) program to the U.S. Interagency Arctic
Research Policy Committee (IARPC;
http://www.nsf.gov/od/opp/arctic/iarpc/start.jsp) at their monthly
meeting, 20 August 2012. IARPC includes representatives from 15 agencies
(e.g., DOC, NSF, DOD, DOS, EPA, etc.). The National Science Foundation
(NSF) chairs the IARPC and is the lead agency responsible for implementing Arctic research
policy. IARPC helps set priorities for
future Arctic research, works with the Arctic Research Commission to
develop and establish an integrated national Arctic research policy to
guide federal agencies in developing and implementing their research
programs in the Arctic, and consults with the Arctic Research Commission
on matters related to Arctic research policy, programs and funding
support. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)
GSI Review Committee-Onsite Coordination Meeting: Brad Pierce presented a summary of NESDIS data assimilation activities at the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) Review Committee-Onsite Coordination Meeting that was held on August 20, 2012 in Boulder CO. The GSI system is the data assimilation system used by NOAA for both conventional and satellite data and is used to initialize NOAA’s operational Global Forecast System (GFS), North American Mesoscale Model (NAM) and Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Rapid Refresh forecasting suite. The Onsite Coordination Meeting is held annually to bring members of the GSI Review Committee together to discuss GSI development status and coordinate future activities. Brad Pierce is the NESDIS representative on the GSI Review Committee and attended this meeting remotely (R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov)

Proving Ground Visit to Local NWS Forecast Office: As part of the Summer 2012 Local GOES-R (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) Proving Ground Testbed, Gary Wade visited the National Weather Service (NWS) Forecast Office (FO) in Sullivan, WI on 21 August 2012, and spent the shift with Science and Operations Officer (SOO) J. Craven. Using the NWS Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) as well as Internet web pages to access experimental GOES-R proxy products from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), Craven and Wade examined and discussed both real-time and case study examples. Although a wide range of GOES-R proxy products were presented, from fog and low stratus probabilities to cloud masks and synthetic GOES-R forecast imagery, there was a focus on how the current GOES Sounder products will morph into the GOES-R “legacy soundings” and the relevancy of both.
