Special Web Page of Rapid Scan GOES Imagery for the NHC: The
National Hurricane Center (NHC) (James Franklin) contacted C. Velden of
Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) to
inquire about a Rapid Scan Operations (RSO) feed of the data from
Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-14 Imager that
included Tropical Storm (TS) Barbara. Apparently the Advanced Weather
Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) was not getting the (RSO) data
from GOES-14, it was only set up for GOES-13. In short order, the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) was
able to modify and update a web page that streamed GOES-14 RSO data (http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/data/rso/). This page allows roaming and zooming
of all five GOES imager spectral bands. NHC gratefully acknowledged the
quick SSEC response, and that it helped the analysis and decision
process in assessing the transition of ex-Barbara into the Gulf of
Mexico. (C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168; J. Robaidek, SSEC; T. Schmit,

CONUS Sectors Now Include Puerto Rico: Due to
the longitudinal position of Geostationary Operational Environmental
Satellite (GOES)-14, Puerto Rico was not covered in the GOES-14 Imager
Continental U.S. (CONUS) sector. Puerto Rico is normally covered when
viewed by GOES-East. The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite
Studies (CIMSS) was contacted by several from the San Juan forecast
office if something could be done to restore their coverage from CONUS
sectors. Working with the Office of Satellite Products and Operations
(OSPO) and others, an adjusted sector was implemented by OSPO on May 31,
2013 at 15:15 UTC. This returned the nominal four views per hour for
Puerto Rico, especially important if there are issues with the local
radar. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov; S.
Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958; J. Gerth, CIMSS)

denoted by the circle, is covered in the adjusted sector.
ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:
Test GOES-13 Imager and Sounder Science Support: The Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) Data Center acquired test GOES-13 GOES Variable (GVAR) data beginning 30 May 2013 (as part of the recovery process following the satellite anomaly of 22 May 2013). Within minutes of the first sectors completing their scans, multi-spectral images from both the Imager and Sounder (as well as those from GOES-14 for comparison) were sent to the Office of Satellite Products and Operations (OSPO) and others. Overall, the image quality was as expected. The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) also provided sample derived images from the GOES-13 Imager (such as the cloud top pressure derived product image). Given there were difficulties with NOAA STAR in College Park, MD being able to obtain the test GOES-13 Imager and Sounder data, the SSEC Data Center opened access to them for this limited testing period.
