SSEC and CIMSS Media Mentions, February 2015: SSEC and CIMSS Media Mentions, February 2015: Data, imagery, and expertise from the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) regularly appear in local, state, and national media. In particular, two press releases garnered extensive attention across social media and traditional media outlets: one noted the launch of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) titled "Changing Weather and Climate in the Great Lakes Region" (led by S. Ackerman and M. Mooney, CIMSS) and the second announced publication of the Nature article, "Observational Determination of Surface Radiative Forcing by CO2 from 2000 to 2010" (co-authored by Jonathan Gero, SSEC). Media mentions for February are available at http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/news/articles/category/ssec-in-the-news#sthash. (L. Avila, CIMSS, 608-262-0783, B. Direct Broadcast Satellite Applications Workshop Held at AOML: Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) personnel taught a workshop entitled "2015 Miami Polar Orbiter Workshop: Satellite Direct Broadcast in Support of Real-Time Environmental Applications" at the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) of NOAA, in Miami, Florida, 10-13 February, 2015. The goal of the workshop is to teach users of the new AOML X/L band antenna how to use direct broadcast polar-orbiting satellite data for the enhancement of environmental forecasting and decision making. The course focused on the use of data from the AOML antenna, including Suomi-NPP and Aqua/Terra instrument observations and products. The course included overviews of polar orbiter satellite instruments and products, allowing the students to become familiar with the data and the standard land, ocean and atmosphere science products available, and the strengths and weaknesses of each one. Workshop students included members of the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the National Weather Service (NWS), the Hurricane Research Division (HRD) and US Fisheries. A workshop website containing all of the course materials is available online at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/dbs/Miami2015/. (K. Strabala, CIMSS, 608-263-8752, L. Gumley, CIMSS, D. Herndon, CIMSS, J. ASPB Rocks Science Week: The NESDIS/STAR Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) participated in the NOAA Satellite Science Week in Boulder, CO the week of February 23, 2015. ASPB participation included meeting planning, session chairing, side meetings, and oral presentations. The presentations were given by Heidinger, Pavolonis, Schmit, and Key on topics of remote sensing of clouds, estimating the probability of severe weather, using satellite data to study Arctic change, and possible new Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) scan modes. There were many splinter group meetings. Additionally, ASPB and others visited Lockheed-Martin to see the GOES-R spacecraft and to Ball Aerospace to see the JPSS-1 spacecraft. (T.
