TRAVEL AND MEETINGS:

Dr. Lidia Cucurull visits CIMSS/SSEC: Dr. Lidia Cucurull, Director of NOAA’s Quantitative Observing System Assessment Program (QOSAP) (https://qosap.research.noaa.gov/), visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) on August 6 and 7, 2024. Dr. Cucurull met with management, scientists, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS) faculty and students and discussed a wide range of topics. They included strategic planning between QOSAP and CIMSS, GeoXO, atmospheric composition, various QOSAP supported projects, oceanography, and career path for graduate students. She also gave a seminar providing an overview of the QOSAP program. Dr. Cucurull also attended two tours: the SSEC building tour which focused on the outreach program, data center, and satellite receiving system, and an instrumentation tour focusing on hyperspectral infrared sounders. TRAINING AND EDUCATION:

CIMSS Holds 3rd Annual Online Student Weather Camp: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) held it's 3rd annual student online Weather Camp the week of July 22-26. The weather camp was developed during Covid to supplement the loss of the in-person workshop during that time however was so popular that it is been renewed each year since. The camp included 48 students from 20 different states along with students from France and India. Topics included the latest advancements in artificial intelligence applications for tropical cyclones, severe weather, optical phenomenon and observations from weather satellites. Guest speakers on weather careers included Marcia Cronce from the National Weather Service office in Sullivan/Milwaukee, Alexis Clemons the morning meteorologist at WKOW in Madison and Mayra Oyola Merced from the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences department at the University of Wisconsin. For the final day, students gave a short presentation on topics that they were interested in and completed a forecast contest. (D. Herndon, CIMSS, 608-262-6741)

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert interviews, imagery and case studies to promote science and satellite imagery. This week: 1) Antarctic Meteorological Researcher and Data Center researcher David Mikolajczyk spoke with the CNN about unusually high temperatures recorded in Antarctica;  2) CIMSS Satellite Blog contributor Scott Lindstrom published the following case studies: "Direct Broadcast imagery of a tropical system north of Guam" (Aug 07), "our named Tropical Cyclones in the eastern Pacific" (Aug 06), "Tornado in Buffalo New York" (Aug 05), "Gravity waves with convection over the Great Lakes" (Aug 05), "Debby in the northeast Gulf of Mexico and a very moist airmass" (Aug 04).
