SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert interviews, imagery and case studies to promote science and satellite imagery. This week: 1) CIMSS Satellite Blog contributor Scott Lindstrom published the following case studies: "Tropical Storm Hone" (Aug 23), "Gilma and Invest 91E (update: Tropical Depression 1C) over the eastern Pacific" (Aug 22), "The extratropical transition of Typhoon Ampil" (Aug 21), "The ample eye of Ampil" (Aug 09), "Emilia and Fabio" (Aug 15). Figure: Himawari-9 airmass RGB imagery, above, shows the extratropical transition of Typhoon Ampil. At the beginning of the animation, the typhoon is approaching Japan from the south. By 0000 UTC on 17 August, the typhoon has moved east of Japan, and a Potential Vorticity anomaly just west of the storm (identifiable by the orange hue in the RGB) suggests the storm is starting to become extratropical.
