CIMSS-NOAA WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING SEPTEMBER 21, 2024
DATA, INFORMATION, AND USE-INSPIRED SCIENCE:
GOES-19 ABI First Light: The GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) Imagery Team provided imagery and image animations for the NOAA GOES-19 Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) first light imagery debut, which appeared as an Earth From Orbit video on September 19, 2024 (https://www.nesdis.noaa.gov/news/noaa-debuts-first-imagery-goes-19), completing a major team milestone. These images were generated using data primarily from August 30 in a collaborative effort between the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), and NOAA/NESDIS/STAR scientists collocated at the cooperative institutes. The images and animations were widely featured on social media and television. (M. Gunshor, CIMSS, 608-263-1146, T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

The purpose of the workshop was to connect users of satellite products to developers and to address user needs that are focus on benefitting Alaskans. Topics addressed were wide-ranging, including native Alaskan needs, meteorology, climatology, hydrology, cryosphere, forestry, volcanology, space weather, and technology. The outcome of meeting was the initiation of new partnerships and share ideas on how to better serve the Alaskan community. (R. Dworak, CIMSS)
CIMSS Attendance at the annual National Weather Association Annual Meeting in Irving Texas: Scott Lindstrom from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) attended the annual meeting on the National Weather Association, held this year in Irving TX from 15-18 September 2024 (https://nwas.org/2024-annual-meeting/). He gave a Showcase presentation on the Community Satellite Processing Package for Geostationary Data (CSPP-Geo) LightningCast Prediction software that will be released in beta form presently, and participated in a Satellite-centric Short Course that focused on the evolution of Hurricane Beryl, using data from this CIMSS Satellite Blog Post: https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/archives/60323.
