CIMSS-NOAA WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING NOVEMBER 29, 2024

DATA, INFORMATION, AND USE-INSPIRED SCIENCE:

CIMSS Reports to CWG on GOES-19 Co-Registration: Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) reported to the GOES-R Calibration Working Group (CWG) and presented findings on November 22 regarding GOES-19 co-registration errors. GOES-19 had subtle co-registration errors between bands on different focal plane arrays that were negatively impacting the volcanic ash detection algorithm (causing false positive detections). On November 14, 2024 a correction for this error was implemented and co-registration errors immediately went away. GOES-19 is undergoing post-launch testing, not being used operationally, and algorithm developers are testing the data for operational readiness ahead of an anticipated operational date in spring 2025.
