TRAVEL AND MEETINGS:

WMO Global Cryosphere Watch Meetings: Jeff Key (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS) participated remotely in two meetings organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW). The meetings were held in Geneva, Switzerland the week of December 2-6, 2024. The first was a meeting for the WMO Rolling Review of Requirements (RRR) on the status of Statements of Guidance for the various Earth System Application Categories, e.g., atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere, etc. Key leads the development of the Statement of Guidance for Cryosphere Applications, which identifies gaps in the cryosphere observing system and provides recommendations for filling the gaps. The second meeting was joint with the WMO Integrated Processing and Prediction System (WIPPS) program. WIPPS asked GCW to identify pilot projects for studies that will enhance prediction, either by improving model components or providing products and analyses to aid in model verification for recommended variables. Key and others proposed a pilot study to use satellite products to verify modeled sea ice properties, and for WIPPS Centres to incorporate those products in their own verification systems. (J. TRAINING AND EDUCATION:

CIMSS at AOMSUC-14 in Delhi India: Scott Lindstrom from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) gave a training presentation and a talk at the 14th Asia-Oceania Meteorological Satellite Users’ Conference (AOMSUC) held 2-6 December in New Delhi India. The meeting was sponsored by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The 75-minute Training Presentation walked users through the steps needed to use Community Satellite Processing Package (CSPP) (https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/cspp/) polar2grid (https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/cspp/polar2grid_v3.1.shtml) software to create imagery from JPSS data using NOAA Open Data Dissemination (NODD) resources, including MIRS (Microwave Integrated Retrieval System) products, NUCAPS (NOAA-Unique Combined Atmospheric Profiling System) plots, VIIRS and ATMS imagery, channel differences and RGB images. The 15-minute talk discussed CIMSS products and tools available to create imagery and why it’s useful for training meteorologists to use satellite imagery. Both presentations are available at the IMD website (https://nmsc.imd.gov.in/aomsuc/schedule.html) and at this CIMSS-hosted website: https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/training/PowerPoints.html. (S.
