CIMSS-NOAA WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING DECEMBER 20, 2024
DATA, INFORMATION, AND USE-INSPIRED SCIENCE:
FUTURE OUTLOOK:
AWARDS AND RECOGNITION:
TRAVEL AND MEETINGS:
CIMSS participates in Special Joint Cryosphere/River Ice/Flood Initiative meeting: William Straka (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS) and Tom Greenwald (CIMSS) participated in the Joint Cryosphere and River Ice/Flood Initiative meeting on December 16, 2024. Led by Straka and Jeremy Goldstein (NOAA), the meeting brought together research scientists from the Cryosphere and River Ice and Flood groups, as well as data users, to discuss available satellite products from the users’ perspective. Greenwald presented an overview of the spatially enhanced Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-2 (AMSR2) imagery and sea ice products provided by CIMSS. A panel discussion followed with Michael Lawson, assistant sea ice meteorologist at the Alaska Sea Ice Program (ASIP) and general forecaster at the Anchorage Weather Forecast Office. (T. Greenwald, CIMSS, 608-263-3629)
Presentation at the Australian Virtual Laboratory (VLab) Regional Focus Group Meeting: Scott Lindstrom from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) gave a short presentation (Always use as much satellite information as possible!) at this month's Australian Bureau of Meteorology's monthly Regional Focus Group meeting, held 17 December 2024. The talk, that showed a variety of images from this CIMSS Satellite Blog post (https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/archives/56186) discussed how different satellite products and images describe different parts of a weather event. The presentation was recorded and is available here: http://www.virtuallab.bom.gov.au/archive/regional-focus-group-recordings/ (a direct link to the recording is here). (S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608 263 4425)
TRAINING AND EDUCATION:
CIMSS telecon for School Teachers on GOES-19: Derrick Herndon and Scott Lindstrom from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) led a one-hour telecon for teachers on Monday 16 December 2024. Teachers attending the telecon (that was recorded) attended the GOES-U Launch on 25 June 2024, and this telecon discussed post-launch testing of GOES-19, future plans for the satellite as GOES-East, and places on-line to access data. There was also discussion on GeoXO Plans for the 2030s. The teachers also received information on learning opportunities for their students in the form of CIMSS Summer Camps (in-person -- http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/studentworkshop/ -- and online — https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/wxcamp/) and the upcoming CIMSS Virtual Science Fair (https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/jpss-vsf/). Information presented at the telecon, and the recording, are available at https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/training/GOESU/GOESU_GOES19Followup.html. (S. Lindstrom, D. Herndon, CIMSS, 608 262 6741)
MEDIA INTERACTIONS AND REQUESTS:
SOCIAL MEDIA AND BLOG Posts:
This week on the CIMSS Satellite Blog: The Satellite Blog from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) showcases ways satellite imagery can explain current and past weather phenomena, and gives hints on how to create beautiful imagery. This week, that was achieved in the following posts: Severe weather across the Bay Area of California (https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/archives/62082); Cyclone Chido makes landfall in Mozambique (https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/archives/62085); Here GOES the 2024 Review (https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/archives/56734); Subtropical Storm Biguá near the coast of Brazil (https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/archives/62167); Using Polar2Grid to display NUCAPS Lapse Rates (https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/archives/62118); Rain Chances over American Samoa (https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/archives/62135).
