GOES-12 WF_ABBA Monitors Rapid Intensification of Wisconsin Wildfire: On the afternoon of May 5 a small brush fire grew into a 4,000-acre forest fire near the town of Big Flats in central Wisconsin forcing the evacuation of nearly 100 people and destroying over 20 houses, cabins, and trailers. The small brush fire was reported at 1:45 pm (18:45 UTC) and grew quickly with forced evacuations by 2:30 pm (19:30 UTC). The GOES-12 Wildfire Automated Biomass Burning Algorithm (WF_ABBA) identified a hot pixel at 19:15 UTC and the fire rapidly intensified resulting in a saturated pixel at 19:32 UTC. This was the state's biggest wildfire in over 20 years. (C. Schmidt, CIMSS, 608-262-7973, E. Prins, 530-271-2256)
