Full Resolution GOES Merged Sounder Product System Becomes Operational:
As planned, the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite
(GOES) Merged Sounding Product System (MSPS) became operational on
November 1, 2005 at 15 UTC. The previous operational Derived Product
Image (DPI) products were generated at approximately 50 km resolution
for the National Weather Service's (NWS) Advanced Weather Interactive
Processing System (AWIPS). Now full resolution DPI products are
generated from the GOES MSPS. This marked the first time that the
nominal 10 km full resolution hourly products, of such parameters as
total precipitable water, lifted index (stability), and surface skin
temperature, were being provided routinely to the standard operational
display system for all NWS forecast offices. To educate users regarding
these products, training material is being prepared within the Virtual
Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) program, which
regularly provides distance learning to NWS offices. (T. J.
