CIMSS-NOAA WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING AUGUST 29, 2025

DATA, INFORMATION, AND USE-INSPIRED SCIENCE:

CIMSS contributes to released ADT-HURSAT dataset: The latest release of the ADT-HURSAT dataset was officially released by NOAA/NCEI. The dataset is a climatology of tropical cyclone intensity estimates from May 1978 to December 31, 2024 using the UW-Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies Advanced Dvorak Technique (ADT) and NOAA/NCEI Hurricane Satellite (HURSAT) imagery. This version represents a significant addition to the previous dataset which ran though 2017 and was utilized in a landmark study (Kossin et al, 2020 in PNAS) documenting increasing global tropical cyclone intensities during the period. The updated dataset can be found at https://doi.org/10.25921/n6va-0b18. (T. Olander, CIMSS, 608-265-8005, C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)
