Snow and Ice Climate Data Records

This site provides information on the NOAA snow and ice climate data records (CDR) project, funded by the NOAA Climate Data Records Program, managed by the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, NC. Our cryosphere product development team is coordinating the generation, validation, and archival of fundamental and thematic snow and ice climate data records, building on existing products and efforts as appropriate. Our goal is to refine, extend, validate, document, and archive visible, infrared, and passive microwave cryosphere products. We are merging existing data into consistent time series, and using these series as a basis for transitioning to NPP and NPOESS products. We are building on existing efforts, coordinating with other funded products, as appropriate. Our focus is on sea ice extent, concentration, thickness, age, and motion, as well as snow cover. The project is not addressing freshwater ice, permafrost and seasonally frozen ground, or solid precipitation.
